About
the Reading Pack:
The goal of this reading pack is to
help you take the first step in reading Japanese. Reading manga is an
amazing way to combine having fun and learning Japanese, and
Yotsubato! is such a simple and enjoyable story that it's the
subject of this first reading pack.
After using this reading pack and
getting a taste of the pure joy that it is to learn how to read in
Japanese, you'll find the inspiration and motivation to keep reading
and tackle other titles.
Here's
a list of what is included in the pack:
- Sixty-six pages of vocabulary list! The vocabulary for each page of the manga compiled to form the ultimate reading companion.
- Over 1200 vocabulary cards plus 31 sentences pre-loaded into Anki decks
- A short instruction manual to help you get the most out of the reading pack
Note: Files come in both
document and PDF formats, packaged inside of a RAR file. To open the RAR, you may need to download WinRAR (you can google or try this download).
The
Vocabulary List:
The vocabulary list's purpose is to
make reading easy. You won't need to look words up in a dictionary
because it's already been done for you. The vocabulary list is a
whopping sixty-six pages long, with each word of each page
listed for convenient reference. It's organized according to the
manga page number, so it's extremely easy to find what you need.
The
Sentences:
Just like the vocabulary list, each
sentence included in the reading pack is from the manga. These are
solid sentences that will really help you with both grammar and
vocabulary. Just load the sentences into Anki after you've had some
time to learn the vocabulary to get additional exposure to the
language.
Anki Decks:
All of the sentences and vocabulary for the first volume of the manga have been pre-loaded into Anki decks, so all you have to do is import. There are more than 1200 cards in total! By combining these decks with the vocabulary reference list, you'll not only be able to read the manga, but learn and remember all of the words that you encounter along the way.

Kinokuniya is now out of stock...they weren't this monday morning! Sais they will try to get more from publisher and will know in 2 weeks! So I ordered from Japan...fairly expensive to send.

If I make a second reading pack, it will be for a different series. If you can make it through the first volume of Yotsubato! with the reading pack, then you should be ready to take on the other volumes without any help. The reading pack is just there to give you a helping hand with the first one.

Your reading pack has given me the kick-start I needed to start reading Japanese.
ReplyDeleteI feel comfortable enough now to take off the stabilizer-wheels and start reading more manga, looking up words myself with a dictionary, but I have a question for you.
How did you go about looking up colloquialisms, contractions and set phrases? I've experimented by entering some of the contractions in your vocab list into online dictionaries, and not had any luck. This is going to be a stumbling point for me, so it would be really helpful if you could give any advice.
And once again, thanks for the reading pack. I really appreciate the work you put into it!

Hey Jon,
DeleteAt your stage, just try to focus on looking up kanji when the full word doesn't work. If you can put the kanji into a dictionary, you can probably find the normal form of the word. Sometimes you just have to skip a word and wait to encounter it again later. As you read more, you'll build up an intuitive knowledge of colloquial language, so you'll know what the normal form is just by looking at it (so then you can go look it up).
Just remember that you don't have to learn it all at once. You can come back or wait to encounter the word later and learn it then.

DeleteWait... are you honestly trying to sell a vocabulary list/anki deck from words extracted from よつばと！? Jesus. If anyone is to be given any money, it is the mangaka, not someone who threw together an anki deck using copyright word; containing vocabulary which is... well, words. Words are free.
ReplyDeleteJust download the free version and upload it to the Anki web shared decks online. Good luck trying to get it removed, considering the content it came from isn't yours.
If you care about the manga, and give a shit about learners, this should be a free resource. Good thing you linked to where the manga is being sold.
Try to set a concrete price for this and keep your eye out for a lawsuit, buddy, considering those sentences you are trying to sell are copyright owned by あずまきよひこ. Scumbag man.
I'm sorry that you feel this way. I'm inclined to think this is some attempt at trolling, but perhaps you're serious. In any event, the content IS offered for free if you so choose and the pack itself is nothing that you could not make yourself if you so chose. There is no need to feel obligated to purchase, as it is ultimately only a tool of convenience.
DeleteBahaha "Words are free", so textbooks should be offered free of charge too? Writers should just give away their finished novels, because "words are free"? As somebody who's actually carried oput similar projects for my own personal use, I actually know how much tedious, laborious effort goes into something like this. By all means, if the price (which can be FREE, if you so choose) is too much for your tastes, compile your own lists yourself and enjoy spending precious time doing that, when you could be studying.
DeleteThe primary purpose of these lists are rendered more-or-less void unless the purchaser also purchases the manga. If anything, this could very well drive up sales of the manga because learners are more likely to go with a manga they have a convenient study route for early on, over manga they would have to do this work for themselves (I know I am).
I hope you're just trolling because honestly your comment was so dripping with sanctimonious idiocy that it decreased my faith in the human race's prospects for surviving through the century, just a little.
It's not entirely clear whether the Anki deck contains everything that the booklet does. Does it?
